Creative Blog- Creative Direction, Branding and Design Projects
I have 30 minutes to plan, photograph and edit photos based on The 1975, using only things that I currently own and the same plain white wall as a backdrop. I will pick clothes, apply make up, style my hair, pose and edit in a style that I think captures the essence of the brand.
argh, this was the most challenging one yet!
but I wanted to branch out and do something a bit more risky and difficult. mission accomplished.
the main challenges were:
- time limit: I wanted to do more but the clock was against me
- the fact that matty healy is a very recognisable force of nature and is way harder to capture the essence of than a brand model
- there were a few graphic elements involved which were hard to accomplish within the time limit
- the gender swap
I used four different editing styles here. the main image looked way too clean so I upped the contrast and clarity, covered a grain over it and then covered a half transparent 'mold' coloured gradient over the top of that. after a quick google, I found that the font used is Futura so mimicking the logo was quite simple.
the 1975's branding changes quite a bit with each album (part of their charm) but I found that symmetry is reasonably consistent, especially within the graphics so I stuck to this.
I based my pics on the older first album brand, even though a couple of the poses are inspired by more recent photos. but hey, I'm a renegade like that, whatcha gonna do.
so for the bottom two, I edited them in classic polaroid style; increased exposure, lowered contrasts yet darker blacks, added a grain and voila.
the top two were based on magazine shoots so slightly different. for the top right I adjusted the white balance to make the image much colder, added a vignette and increased the exposure (I think he had a spotlight on his face in the original shoot, so this is how I mimicked that).
the top left was mainly all about very dark blacks and high contrast for a very grungy black and white look, love that I do.
if i had had more time I would have photoshopped my hair darker but I went for a classic messy emo/grunge up do and applied some dark lipstick and liquid eyeliner (thanks Kat Von D) to capture the emo-ness.
I felt the polaroids with the typed font were quite prominent in the early branding days so I whapped that on at the last minute; using the captions from matty's instagram, on the photos that inspired my ones. CLEVER RIGHT?
I'm not as pleased with the outcome of this as the others but I think with more time I could have done way better; it's all a learning curve, amirite?
BYE for now.
